# Supported Currencies

> Currencies Glyde supports and what you can do in each

Glyde holds a separate wallet for each currency your business transacts in. Every request that moves money is tied to one currency, and a currency must be enabled for an operation before the API accepts it.

## Currencies

| Currency | ISO code | Country | Collections | Transfers (payouts) | Settlements |
| - | - | - | :-: | :-: | :-: |
| Nigerian Naira | `NGN` | Nigeria | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
| South African Rand | `ZAR` | South Africa | — | ✅ | — |

If you send a currency that isn't enabled for an operation, the request fails with `422`:

```json theme={null}
{
  "status": "failed",
  "message": "Validation error",
  "data": null,
  "errors": {
    "currency": ["The provided currency is not supported."]
  }
}
```

## Home Currency

Each business has a **home currency**, which comes from the country it is registered in. If you leave `currency` out of a request, Glyde uses the home currency. For example, a Nigerian business that omits `currency` transacts in `NGN`.

Pass `currency` explicitly when you work with more than one wallet. This makes sure the right wallet is used.

## Wallets

Balances are kept per currency. A transfer always debits the wallet that matches its currency, and funds never move between your NGN and ZAR wallets automatically.

Use the `currency` query parameter to check a specific wallet:

```bash theme={null}
GET /v1/check-balance?currency=ZAR
```

```json theme={null}
{
  "status": "success",
  "message": "Balance retrieved",
  "data": {
    "balance": 25000,
    "currency": "ZAR"
  },
  "errors": null
}
```

If your business has no wallet in the requested currency, the API returns `404` with the message `This business has no ZAR wallet.`

## Differences by Currency

| | NGN | ZAR |
| - | - | - |
| Bank codes | 3-digit CBN codes (e.g. `058`) | 6-digit universal branch codes (e.g. `250655`) |
| Account number | 10 digits | 7–11 digits |
| Account name enquiry | Available via `/v1/account-enquiry` | Not available. Send `account_name` on the transfer |
| `account_type` | Not used | Optional: `savings`, `current` or `cheque` |

`/v1/banks` returns banks for every supported market. Bank codes are only unique within a market, so the `bank_code` you send must belong to the payout currency's country. Otherwise the transfer is rejected with `Unrecognized bank code`.

## Amounts

Transfer amounts are given in **major units** of the payout currency. For example, `5000` with `NGN` sends ₦5,000, and `750` with `ZAR` sends R750. Fees are charged in the same currency as the transfer and are deducted from the same wallet.
